A VFD that trips on overcurrent within the first week of operation is almost always a duty-rating mismatch. Put a light-duty drive on a crusher or an extruder and the overload protection will catch up with you fast. On the flip side, speccing a heavy-duty drive for a simple centrifugal fan wastes capital that could be better spent elsewhere. Understanding how the EMHeater EM10 and EM15 series differ in their duty classifications makes this decision straightforward.
The key difference comes down to overload capability. Light-duty (LD) drives handle 110 percent overload for 60 seconds—fine for variable-torque loads like fans and pumps. Heavy-duty (HD) drives, like the EM15 series, deliver 150 percent overload for the same period, which is essential for high starting torque applications such as crushers, extruders, and hoists. The EM15 also provides 150 percent starting torque at 0.5 Hz versus 100 percent for the EM10.
| Motor Power | EM10-G2 (Light Duty) | EM15 (Heavy Duty) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.75 kW | EM10-G2-007 | EM15-007 |
| 1.5 kW | EM10-G2-015 | EM15-015 |
| 2.2 kW | EM10-G2-022 | EM15-022 |
| 3.7 kW | EM10-G2-037 | EM15-037 |
| 5.5 kW | EM10-G2-055 | EM15-055 |
Beyond the overload rating, a few other factors should guide the choice. Constant-torque loads need the HD rating. If the application requires rapid deceleration, the EM15 series supports an optional braking resistor. Both series derate above 40 °C ambient, but the EM15 offers a wider safety margin. And when ambiguous, the HD rating is the safer bet—the marginal cost difference is minor compared to an emergency field replacement.
For fans, pumps, and conveyors running at variable torque, the EMHeater EM10-G2 or EM10-G3 delivers reliable performance at a competitive price. For shock loads, frequent start-stop cycles, or high breakaway torque, step up to the EM15 series. Either way, the drives share a common parameter structure, so switching between series doesn't require retraining your maintenance team.
